Awareness is the beginning of all change
Today I was reflecting about awareness. We often talk about personal development as if it’s about improving ourselves. Becoming more disciplined, more productive, or more successful. As if there’s always a “better version” of us somewhere ahead that we need to reach. But what if it’s not about becoming something more? What if it’s actually about coming closer to who you already are?
Because the truth is, personal growth isn’t about becoming a new version of yourself. It’s about becoming more of yourself. It’s about gently peeling away the layers you’ve gathered over time, expectations, old beliefs, and automatic reactions, and asking yourself: what is truly me?
We are shaped by so much along the way. Experiences, relationships, what we’ve been told, and what we’ve come to believe. Over time, this turns into patterns of thinking and beliefs that feel completely true, even when they might not be. And without even noticing it, these patterns begin to influence how you think, how you feel, and the choices you make. This is where awareness comes in.
When you start becoming more aware, something shifts. You’re no longer just inside your thoughts and reactions. you begin to see them. You notice what’s happening within you instead of automatically being pulled along by it.
Maybe you start to recognize patterns you hadn’t seen before. Maybe you become aware of thoughts you’ve always taken for granted. Maybe you feel that something no longer feels right, even if it has always been that way. And yes, it can feel uncomfortable. But it’s also where something begins to open up.
Because when you see yourself more clearly, you’re given a new opportunity: you can choose. Not necessarily to change everything at once, but to take a small step in a new direction. To think a slightly different thought. To respond in a new way. To listen a little more to yourself. That’s how change begins. Not through pressure or the need to become something more, but through awareness and honesty. And maybe, that’s where you find what you’ve been looking for all along, not outside of you, but within you.
